Each Time is the Last Time
by Dana Netz

(Quite some time ago I was talking about country music with guitar-playing genius Matt Bennett.  I told him that I thought that just about anyone could write a country song and that if he would write the music then I would pen the lyrics.  He never came through on the tune but my lyrics are below.  Around 2010 I had the privilege of having this poem published by the local poetry group.

(I think of this being sung as a dirge by some soulful country woman like Patsy Cline or early Loretta Lynn.)

What can I do?
What did I say?
Why is it each time
It turns out this way?

I'm trying so hard
To meet you half way
Sometimes it's good
But then there's today.

I'll walk out your door
You'll do me no harm
But why do I know
I'll come back to your arms?

I've done this before
I can't understand
Each time is the last time
I'll do it again

It all seems so clear
I just need some time
But then come the doubts
That cloud up my mind.

I start off so brave
So sure that I'm right
I'm okay in the day
Then comes the night.

I'll walk out your door
You'll do me no harm
But why do I know
I'll come back to your arms?

I've done this before
I can't understand
Each time is the last time
I'll do it again

I try to forget
The hurt and the pain
Then you say you love me
And it's all right again

We hope it stays good
But we both know
It's good till it isn't
Just like before

I'll walk out your door
You'll do me no harm
But why do I know
I'll come back to your arms?

I've done this before
I can't understand
Each time is the last time
I'll do it again
